The University of Belize Hosts Meeting to Discuss the GeoBus Belize Project
On Wednesday August 30th, 2023, the University of Belize hosted Dr. Tim Hawthorne and Dr. Angela Vergara from GeoBus Global and the University of Central Florida to engage in discussion on the GeoBus Belize Project.
In the morning, faculty members from the Science Department met with the GeoBus Global Directors to discuss and plan around shared interests in community outreach and promoting STEM education in Belize. In the afternoon, the President of the University of Belize, Dr. Vincent Palacio along with representatives from the Institutional Advancement Office, Mr. Egbert Irving and Mr. Arnulfo Kantun, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Dr. Apolonio Aguilar, Science Dept. Chair, Ms. Karen Bautista, and GIS Lecturer, Mr. Antonio Cano engaged in further dialogue with Dr. Hawthorne and Dr. Vergara. These discussions centered on the role that the University of Belize can play in partnership with GeoBus Global to collaboratively achieve the mission and vision of both organizations in promoting and enhancing science and technology-based learning to Belizean students, community members, and other stakeholders.
GeoBus Belize aims to be Central America’s first GeoBus, a mobile science learning lab focused on maps, apps, and drones, powered by the sun on a donated 28ft repurposed city bus that visits Belize schools and libraries.
